Trump Files Lawsuit Against University of California Over Antisemitism
Filed in federal district court in Los Angeles, the complaint charged that UCLA had "turned a blind eye to - and at times facilitated - grossly antisemitic acts and systematically ignored cries for help from its own terrified Jewish and Israeli employees."
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi issued a sharp rebuke of university leadership, stating: "Based on our investigation, UCLA administrators allegedly allowed virulent anti-Semitism to flourish on campus, harming students and staff alike."
The lawsuit marks the latest escalation in a prolonged standoff between federal authorities and UCLA. In July 2025, the Trump administration froze roughly $584 million in federal research funding over what officials described as an inadequate institutional response to antisemitism. One month later, Washington raised the stakes further, demanding a $1 billion settlement to resolve the mounting accusations.
The university received partial legal relief in September, when a federal judge in California's Northern District ordered the restoration of $500 million in medical research grants.
The dispute traces its roots to the spring of 2024, when a nationwide wave of pro-Palestinian demonstrations engulfed college campuses — including several of UC's 10 institutions. At UCLA alone, more than 200 protesters were arrested on May 2, 2024, as law enforcement dismantled an on-campus encampment.
