China Say Palestine Must Stay Core of Middle East Issue
Chinese UN Ambassador Fu Cong, addressing a formal Security Council session, declared that the Palestinian question "is, and always will be, the core of the Middle East issue" — framing Beijing's position in unambiguous terms as international pressure over the conflict continues to mount.
Fu painted a stark picture of a region under strain, warning that conditions across the Middle East have escalated "dramatically" over recent months, rippling outward to destabilize energy markets and weigh on the global economy.
Beijing called on all parties to "seize the window of peace," urging maximum restraint, genuine political will, and an unwavering commitment to a negotiated settlement — cautioning that hard-won ceasefire progress could otherwise unravel.
Conditions on the ground inside the occupied Palestinian territories remain dire, Fu warned, with the foundational framework for a two-state solution at risk of being "completely hollowed out." He firmly rejected any notion of inevitability, insisting that turmoil and war are "not the fate" of the Palestinian people.
The ambassador urged the broader international community to act with "the greatest sense of urgency" to reverse what he characterized as a deepening "negative trajectory" and confront the long-standing historic injustice endured by Palestinians.
Fu laid out three non-negotiable priorities: an immediate end to Palestinian civilian suffering, a full halt to settlement expansion, and sustained support for the two-state solution — which he described as "non-negotiable."
China specifically called out Israel, demanding all concerned parties fully honor existing ceasefire commitments to secure a comprehensive and lasting halt to hostilities in Gaza, and to meet their obligations under international humanitarian law by dismantling all barriers obstructing aid delivery.
Israel has failed to meet obligations under a ceasefire agreement in force since Oct. 10, 2025, including reopening border crossings and permitting agreed volumes of food, medical supplies, emergency relief, and shelter materials into the territory.
Violations have continued, with shelling and gunfire claiming the lives of 818 Palestinians and wounding 2,301 others since the truce took effect, according to figures from the Gaza Health Ministry.
The ceasefire followed two years of Israeli military operations in Gaza that began Oct. 8, 2023 — a campaign that, according to available data, has killed at least 72,600 Palestinians, injured more than 172,400, and destroyed roughly 90% of civilian infrastructure across the territory.
