UN Official Warns of Rapid Deterioration in Palestinian Territories

(MENAFN) A senior United Nations committee official warned on Tuesday that conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories are rapidly worsening, urging immediate action from the Security Council in response to Israeli policies, according to remarks delivered at a UN debate on the Middle East.

Umar Hadi, vice chair of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, said the current trajectory is moving away from peace and toward greater division and hardship.

“The situation in the occupied Palestinian territory is not progressing towards peace. It is moving toward deeper fragmentation, dispossession, and despair as Israel entrenches its illegal occupation by the day, escalating its unlawful policies and violent practices against the Palestinian people,” he said.

He emphasized that Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem should not be viewed separately, arguing instead that they form a single political and territorial entity under occupation and must be addressed as one issue.

“They are one political, legal, and territorial unit under brutal and unlawful Israeli occupation, and they must be addressed as such,” he said.

Hadi also warned against treating Gaza as an isolated humanitarian case while other developments continue across the territories, saying such an approach would not lead to peace as long as settlement expansion and violence persist elsewhere.

“Gaza must not be treated as an isolated humanitarian exception; while annexation, settlement expansion, and violence continue elsewhere, peace will not come through fragmentation,” he said.

Regarding Jerusalem, he called for an end to what he described as unilateral actions altering the city’s status, saying such measures undermine Palestinian cultural, historical, and religious ties to the area.
